Cotton: I`ve always wanted to do Rally GB...

by Geoff Mayes

Cornwall based Matt Cotton will become the first Cornish driver to contest the Wales Rally GB in ten years this week, when he starts what is the final round in the 2008 Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship - and also the final round in the WRC.

The 29-year-old is doubly excited about the event as not only as he always wanted to do it, but he is still in with a chance in the Citroen C2R2 Cup in only his first season too.

Cotton, a former BTRDA class champion and winner of the BRC 'Stars of the Future' in 2007, made the step up to the highly competitive Citroen C2R2 Cup at the beginning of 2008.

The deal was done at the very last minute and ended badly with a high speed roll on the opening round. However, since then the Warranty Manager has improved his pace in leaps and bounds, with stage times showing that he should not be discounted.

A string of fastest stage times and second overall on the last round, the International Rally of Yorkshire, has moved him right into contention for the title, and with Rally GB a double header a total of 40 championship points are up for grabs.

Although the Rallynuts.com backed driver and co-driver Anthony Godden have never tackled the World Rally Championship event before they have vowed to fight from the start.

"I have wanted to do this rally since I was a little kid so I am really looking forward to it," said Cotton. "However, with the way the championship stands there is only one approach. We will have to go flat out from the very start. It will be the longest sprint rally ever!

"I feel very privileged to be tackling the MSA British Rally Championship in its 50th year and must say a massive thanks to my family for all of their support, as well as to Ti Motorsport and Rallynuts.com."
