Mitsubishi's Guy Wilks took the honours in the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship on day 1 of the Wales Rally GB, the sixth round in the series.
The result after a foreshortened event means that the championship will go down to the wire on the seventh and final round in the BRC - legs two and three of Wales Rally GB on Saturday and Sunday.
The battle still depends though on whether championship rival Mark Higgins can repair his badly damaged car. He retired on the second stage of the day, rolling his car after hitting sheet ice.
Patrik Flodin meanwhile, who registered at the start of the season for BRC points, took second place, but as he is not in the title hunt, the result merely took points from third placed David Higgins, who had a tricky event but who hopes to improve his car for tomorrow.
Gwyndaf Evans was next up and fourth although he had been higher until he lost around three minutes in a deep ford in the Myherin stage. Wilks' Mitsubishi Motors team-mate did enough however, to keep them level with rivals for the Teams' Championship, Team TQ.com.
TQ.com's boss Hugh Evans rounded out the BRC top five, the result helping keep the Teams' battle alive.
