Gould aims high.

Adam Gould has conceded that while he faces a steep learning curve this year that won't stop him from trying to challenge at the very top in the MSA British Rally Championship.

Gould will get the chance to step up this season and use a four-wheel drive car having won the Pirelli Star Driver shoot-out back in December and having taken the wraps of his Subaru Impreza N14 at the Autosport International Show on Thursday, he is raring to go.

"Now that I have a drive in a car that is potentially capable of winning the championship that is what I have got to aim towards and that is what I have to go for," said the 21-year-old.

"It is a tough, tough challenge ahead and we will see how it goes after the first round. But that has got to be my aim going into the season.

"The only four-wheel drive car I have driven really is the N11 that Mark [Higgins] has been driving this year and which was used in the shoot-out. I haven't driven the N14 at all and it was just unveiled yesterday [Thursday] at the show. It looks fantastic and I can't wait to get in it and start testing."

Gould drove a Renault Clio last season in the BRC, but despite having only minimal mileage in a Group N car, he doesn't think getting use to it will be his biggest problem.

"It is going to be difficult to be on the pace straight away. It is not so much the transition though it is what you are up against," he explained. "These guys in the British championship – Mark Higgins, David Higgins, have been doing it a long time and they have got a lot of great experience of the cars and the events.

"I am sure I will hopefully adapt to the car quite quickly. But to get on the same pace might take a little while."

As for last year as a whole, Gould branded it an 'absolutely brilliant' season for him: "Throughout 2008 we had three wins during the championship and winning the Pirelli Star Driver shoot-out at the end was the icing on the cake for me. It was all a bit lucky in a way too, and before the first event of 2008, with one week to go, we were sitting there with no deal. Then Richard Asquith at Autosport Technology came along and offered me the drive in the Clio.

"It was a great package all year and it didn't let us down. This has enabled us to win this prize drive now for 2009 and hopefully it is going to be a great year," he concluded.
