Mansell splits with Ultimate

Greg Mansell has left the Ultimate Motorsport team with two races remaining in the World Series by Renault campaign, amid rumours that he could be headed elsewhere for the rest of the season.

A brief statement issued by on behalf of both Mansell Motorsport and Ultimate confirmed the departure, but gave no reason why the younger son of F1 world champion Nigel Mansell had decided to end the partnership which, despite yielding only three points from seven double-header rounds, appeared to have been progressing since Mansell Jr made the switch from the Atlantic Championship over the winter.

“It is, of course, with regret that we announce that Greg is leaving us, as he was a popular team member who showed us that he has a clear talent and progressed from race to race," team owner Barry Walsh confirmed, "We wish him all the best in his racing career.”

With the Mansells unavailable for comment, speculation will continue to surround the split, particularly with other sources suggesting that he could wind up at a rival operation for the remaining rounds at the Nurburgring and Motorland Aragon. Italiaracing.net reports that Comtec is a potential destination for the Briton, whose illustrious father also enjoyed a run in Ultimate's car during the recent Silverstone round.

Comtec, meanwhile, enjoyed its first success of the season when another Briton, Jon Lancaster, triumphed at Portimao, but has operated something of a revolving door in 2009, with Lancaster joining John Martin, Harald Schlegelmilch, Alberto Valerio, Cristiano Morgado, Max Chilton, Anton Nebylitskiy and Alex Marsoin on the roster of drivers used.
