TT Dream: Rollercoaster...

When I first decided that I would take the plunge and attempt the TT this year, I didn't expect any stage of it to be easy. But it's also fair to say I hadn't expected to experience such a rollercoaster of emotions before we'd even reached Easter!
Despite the freezing weather it has certainly been a busy few weeks. Having rebuilt the Supertwin with its upgraded forks and given it a quick (and cold!) shake down at Snetterton, I was off to Brands Hatch for the first round of the Thundersport GB series.
Thundersport is a relatively new club, but already it is arguably the most competitive paddock in the country outside of BSB, making Brands [pictured] a good chance to get some seat time on the twin in a good quality field, and blow away the winter cobwebs.
The cold and wet weather that initially greeted us wasn't ideal, but it was as good as it got once the cold had turned to snow and an oil slick had gone down around half the circuit! The joys of being a UK club racer in early spring...
Despite the weather, the oil slick and a couple of small mechanical issues, it was a promising weekend, and I felt at home on the twin fairly quickly. A quartet of finishes in the lower reaches of the points with a best of 10th was nothing to write home about. But given it was the first time I had ridden the bike in anger, it was a start that promised good things.
Away from the circuit though, things were all about to change when I headed home, flicked on the laptop and to my excitement found that I had an email from the TT organisers:
“Dear Oliver... regarding your entry to TT 2013... I am afraid that I have to inform you that your entry for this year's event has been unsuccessful”.
Competing at the 2013 TT had become an all encompassing dream, bordering on obsession, for the last 6 months. I can't describe the feeling that accompanied that email except to say I don't think I have ever felt so completely disappointed! All of the races were oversubscribed and I knew that the Supersport races were particularly popular, so I had always guessed they might be a long shot. To miss out on both classes though was gutting.
But having had a decent run at the Manx GP last year I wasn't giving this up without a fight. Cue some frantic emails and a couple of phone calls to the organisers during the week after Brands, and they agreed to take a second look at my application. By the end of the week, I had received a second email:
“Dear Oliver... regarding your entry to TT 2013... after further conversations... we would like to offer you an entry into the Lightweight Class”
So within 7 days I had been built up, utterly destroyed, and then revived again! With a huge sigh of relief I now have a confirmed entry for the Supertwin race and I really cannot thank Gary Thompson and the TT Race Management Team enough for taking a second look at my entry.
Although I have missed out on a slot in the Supersport races, in a way that makes life a little easier. I can now focus all of my attention on getting the twin set-up for the TT course and getting up to speed on it. Racing wise, next up is the Easter weekend meeting at Donington Park and hopefully the weather will perk up enough to enable us some decent dry weather running before the road racing season starts in late April.
Hopefully that's all the drama we'll have to suffer through between now and TT fortnight. Then all I'll need to do is qualify in a field that now has Mr McGuinness himself as a confirmed entrant. Should be easy then eh!
