NW200: McWilliams all set for debut at top Irish road race
17 May 2012
Jeremy McWilliams makes his full racing debut at the Relentless International North West 200 in the Supertwin event tonight and the former Grand Prix star is looking forward to the experience.
McWilliams is riding for Ryan Farquhar's KMR Kawasaki team and has no intention of simply riding around to collect a pay cheque on the North Coast.
“I think I'll be trying to beat everybody that's on the same track,” he said.
“Of course you want to win but I've got to approach it in a different way to the likes of [Michael] Rutter and Ryan [Farquhar.]
“They approach it with prior experience and I'm approaching it as a newcomer.
“It's quite different for me and I can't expect to go out there with all guns blazing, so I'm happy enough to get up to speed at my own pace,” added McWilliams, who's a former winner on the roads at Macau in the Far East.
“It's been a long time since I won at Macau but I remember going there and putting myself under a lot of pressure to learn the track quickly and get up to speed.
“I think the North West 200 though is a much more technical circuit than Macau.
“I would have preferred it if the really fast corners like Mather's were still how they used to be before the chicanes were put in, because I tend to excel on circuits that have corner with fast entries - I do prefer the faster sections to the fairly stop-start ones,” McWilliams told the Belfast News Letter.
“The chicanes are part of the safety aspect, but personally I'd probably have preferred the circuit the way it was.”
McWilliams' team-mate Ryan Farquhar is the race favourite on his ER6 machine, with Michael Rutter – a 12 times winner at the North West – also expected to play a major role.
Rutter also rides in Farquhar's KMR Kawasaki colours in the event.
