McGuinness expected better at Macau Grand Prix
John McGuinness was disappointed to miss out on a rostrum place at the Macau Grand Prix.

The 19-times Isle of Man TT winner from Morecambe crossed the line in seventh place after overshooting at Lisboa as he attempted to make a pass on Gary Johnson for fourth.

McGuinness, who was riding for the SMT Honda team at Macau, had qualified in second position behind team-mate and race winner, Michael Rutter.

“To be honest, after being fastest in free practice and then qualifying in second behind my team-mate, I'm disappointed not to have made it on to the podium,” said McGuinness.

“I was running at the front in all of the sessions and my pace was very strong but I was keen to get by Gary and it was my own fault as I simply made a mistake and outbraked myself going into Lisboa.

“I got going again but had lost a lot of ground so just brought the bike home,” he added.

“I proved that I was competitive throughout the meeting though and both the bike and the team were fantastic throughout so a big thanks to them.”

The TT legend passed on his condolences to the family of Portuguese rider Luis Carreira, who was killed in an accident during first qualifying.

“Obviously, the whole event was overshadowed by the death of Luis and it's a great loss to the sport and more so to all his friends and family so my thoughts and deepest condolences go out to them at this very sad time,” he said.

Rutter won the event for the eighth time to move further ahead of Ron Haslam as the most successful rider ever to compete at Macau.

McGuinness is among a plethora of the sport's top names due to attend the Motorcycle Live show at the NEC in Birmingham, which commences on Saturday and runs until December 2.

What's new. He's over rated and only gets these rides because he can win at the TT club race. Way off the pace at WEC and BSB despite being on factory backed bikes. Needs to move over to let the youngsters in.
There are no longer class riders racing at Macau. When did a Grand Prix race winner last win a race there. Was it Kevin Schwantz 1988.

Modern Class riders dont have the balls for road racing.
Guys like McGuinness and Rutter will always be legends for doing what they do.
A factory bike isnt going to help someone who's 30 seconds off the pace and doesnt have the skill, experience or sheer guts to go 150km+ through blind, bumpy corners flanked by concrete/metal walls.
