Josh Brookes in talks over North West 200 debut

5 December 2012

The organisers of the North West 200 in Northern Ireland are hopeful that British Superbike protagonist Josh Brookes will make his debut at the event next May.

Australian rider Brookes has already confirmed his maiden appearance at the Isle of Man TT in 2013, when he will ride in the Superbike, Superstock and Senior events for Tyco Suzuki.

However, the 29-year-old – who finished as the runner-up in the British Superbike Championship this year to Shane 'Shakey' Byrne – has refused to commit to the North West 200 as a warm-up event to the TT, saying he has little interest in other roads meetings other than the legendary Mountain race.

Nonetheless, the organisers of the Ulster event remain hopeful Brookes will join Guy Martin in the Tyco Suzuki colours at the event on May 18.

North West 200 technical director Mervyn Whyte has held talks with Brookes and Tyco Suzuki team boss Philip Neill in recent days, although Whyte concedes that 'the finer details have to be finalised'.

“We are not there yet, but it would be great to have him at the North West,” Whyte told BBC Northern Ireland.
