Stars in running for coveted 'rider of year' gong

17 January 2013

Ireland's motorcyclist of the year will be crowned at a prestigious awards bash in Belfast tomorrow evening.

Seven riders have made the shortlist for the main accolade, with the winner presented with the coveted Joey Dunlop trophy.

The nominees include World Superbike pair Eugene Laverty and Jonathan Rea, road racers, Ryan Farquhar and Michael Dunlop, British championship stars Keith Farmer and Jack Kennedy plus Graeme Irwin, the sole motocross rider to make the final seven.

Former British 250cc champion Adrian Coates, the chairman of the judging panel that will oversee the public vote for the top accolade, said: “Our riders have been outstanding on World, British and Irish level, both on the short circuits, the roads, and off-road.

“That's what has made this year's vote such an intriguing one. We are blessed to have so many top class riders in the country.”

Alastair Seeley was crowned the 2012 Irish Motorcyclist of the Year last January following his dramatic capture of the British Supersport title.

A total of 12 other awards will be presented, including international road racer of the year, team of the year, race of the year and short circuit rider of the year.
