Farquhar signs ex-Irish champion McCormack

1 March 2013

Ryan Farquhar has added former Irish Superbike champion Brian McCormack to his KMR Kawasaki team for the 2013 road races.

McCormack had been struggling to find a ride after parting company from Northern Ireland team CD Racing.

The 29-year-old from Waterford won the Adelaide Masters short circuit series in Ireland last year and competed in selected road race meetings.

Farquhar, who retired from the sport in 2012 following the death of his uncle in an accident at the Manx Grand Prix, will provide McCormack with Kawasaki ZX-10R Superbike and Superstock machines for the North West 200, Isle of Man TT and Ulster Grand Prix.

He will also compete at the national road races and is expected to have his first ride for Farquhar's team at the Cookstown 100 in April.

McCormack joins young guns Jamie Hamilton, James Cowton and Connor Behan in the KMR Kawasaki colours this year, with ex-Grand Prix ace Jeremy McWilliams and Michael Rutter in line to link up with Farquhar for the Supertwin races at the North West 200 in May.

“I got talking to Brian at the recent Adelaide Awards night and when I found out he was without a ride, we started to put the wheels in motion,” Farquhar said.

“I've known him for a good few years now and had some good battles with him so I know what he's capable of and we've put together a good package for the season.

“A rider of his calibre shouldn't be on the sidelines and with his experience and my experience, I think we've got all the makings for a really strong season.

“He's proven himself on the roads over the past couple of seasons and is going from strength to strength so I think we can help move him up to the next level and I'm very happy to have helped him get back on the grid for 2013,” said Farquhar.

McCormack has vowed to grab his chance with both hands as he bids to step up to the next level on the roads under Farquhar's tutelage.

“I'm delighted to be joining Ryan and his team and it's a tremendous opportunity for me, one I intend to firmly grasp with both hands,” said McCormack.

“I know how hard Ryan works and how meticulous he is in his preparation so I'm thrilled to be getting the chance to ride the bikes he's won so much on.

“This will be my third full season on the roads and with Ryan's knowledge, expertise, advice and machinery, I'm confident of improving even further and moving up the leaderboard considerably.”

Farquhar's KMR Kawasaki team is being back by Northern Ireland's Vauxhall dealers in 2013.
