Cookstown 100: Guy Martin 'beaten by better man'

28 April 2013

Guy Martin conceded he was 'beaten by the better rider on the day' as Northern Ireland hero Michael Dunlop twice outgunned the Tyco Suzuki rider in the feature Superbike class at the Cookstown 100.

Martin was unable to match Dunlop's record-breaking pace on his factory-supported GSX-R1000 at the Orritor circuit in Co Tyrone.

Dunlop was having his first ride on the season on his Hunts Motorcycles/McAdoo Honda Fireblade, but he was a league apart as he shattered the lap record three times in the main Superbike race to dominate the opening Irish national roads meeting of the season.

Martin managed to hold off Dunlop in the Supersport race, making a break after his main rival was held up for two laps behind slower riders and the Lincolnshire man was happy with his consolation prize.

"I knew I was comfortable in the Supersport race when I saw plus four on my pitboard, but probably backed off a bit too much and let Dunlop back into the race, what with slowing down and a bit of a mistake," said Martin.

"He's a good old boy and we had a good race but he did hit me on the last lap. I'm just glad I was able to hang in for the win.

"In that last Superbike race I really couldn't have given any more. I think I led for four laps and I also went under my old lap record, but I can't knock the man – I was just beaten by a slightly better rider on the day," admitted Martin.

"We still have a few things we want to try with the Superbike before the North West 200 but I've already spoken to Philip [Neill] about them today and we're on it."

Team boss Philip Neill made it to Cookstown despite suffering a broken collarbone and dislocating two fingers after crashing his Mountain Bike on the morning of the event.

He, too, could only tip his hat to Dunlop following the 24-year-old's show-grabbing performance.

"All credit to Michael in the Cookstown 100 race. To break the lap record three times in one race – well there's not much you can say only congratulate the lad.”
