TT 2013: Dunlop grabs Superbike headlines
1 June 2013
Northern Ireland's Michael Dunlop topped the Superbike times at the Isle of Man TT ahead of tomorrow's six-lap showdown on the Mountain circuit.
The Honda TT Legends rider set his best ever lap of the 37.73-mile circuit at 130.89mph to soar to the top of the charts from team-mate John McGuinness, who lapped at 130.106mph today.
Dunlop's lap raises the prospect of a potential thriller between the three-times TT winner and McGuinness, who is bidding for a 20th TT victory.
The Superbike TT was postponed by a day to allow extra qualifying after practice week was hit by poor weather.
The pair were the only riders to clock 130mph laps during practice week, taking the top two fastest times with Gary Johnson third quickest today on his Honda Fireblade at 129.61mph followed by Tyco Suzuki's Guy Martin (128.68mph).
Michael Rutter on a third Honda TT Legends machine was next at 128.63mph.
Manx rider Conor Cummins was fastest through the speed trap at Sulby on his Milwaukee Yamaha YZF-R1 at 193.4mph, with team-mate William Dunlop second quickest at 191.7mph.
Michael Dunlop also headed the times in the Supersport class on his MD Racing Honda at 125.15mph with McGuinness second fastest on the HM Plant/Padgett's Honda at 124.18mph from his Padgett's team-mate Bruce Anstey (124.08mph).
William Dunlop was third fastest on the Milwaukee Yamaha R6 at 124mph.
Martin led the Superstock times at 127.023mph following from Rutter on the Bathams Honda at 125.25mph, Johnson (124.09mph) and McGuinness (124.02mph).
In the Lightweight Supertwin class, James Hillier set the fastest speed of the week on his Kawasaki at 115.66mph to take the top spot from Rutter on the Vauxhall KMR Kawasaki (115.21mph), Ivan Lintin (114.34mph) and the impressive Jamie Hamilton on another of Ryan Farquhar's KMR Kawasaki machines at 114.06mph.
Michael Dunlop completed one lap on the McAdoo Kawasaki ER6 at 113.39mph.
