McGuinness pull out stops to claim Supersport TT rostrum

'I had a big slide at Cronk-ny-Mona and my feet were off the pegs so I was pushing the bike hard but the pace was incredible right from the off' - John McGuinness
John McGuinness equalled Joey Dunlop's record of 40 Isle of Man TT podiums after the Morecambe rider narrowly edged out William Dunlop for the final rostrum spot in the second Supersport race.

McGuinness also set his fastest ever lap on a 600cc machine on the HM Plant/Padgett's Honda at 127.210mph on his final lap to pip Dunlop by 0.972s after 150-miles of racing on the Mountain Course.

Michael Dunlop shattered the lap record with a final lap of 128mph to win by over two seconds from long-time leader Bruce Anstey and the pair were over 40 seconds ahead of McGuinness in third, who said he has 'never rode harder'.

“In what's becoming a recurring theme this week, I have never ridden harder,” said McGuinness.

“I knew the gap between William and myself was next to nothing so I pushed and pushed as I was desperate for that final podium spot.

“I had a big slide at Cronk-ny-Mona and my feet were off the pegs so I was pushing the bike hard but the pace was incredible right from the off,” he added.

“It was wheel to wheel stuff again and another great race to be part of whilst the HM Plant Padgett's boys did a great job once more.

“In all the years I've been riding for them, the bikes have completed every lap and although I might not have won one yet, I'm having a great week,” he said.

“To equal Joey's record number of podiums is something special too and I'm very proud of that feat.”

You know John will be giving his all in the Senior. He wants that 20th win! What a TT week, super weather and perhaps the changing of the guard at the Isle. The comments from McGuinness and Anstey suggest that they both see the writing on the wall. They won't go without a fight, that's for sure. Brilliant stuff.

It has been amazing this week and John is right he hasn't ridden harder his lap times are showing that, especially on the 600, prior to this week I don't believe he did a lap on the 600 in less that 18 minutes, on his final lap yesterday he did a 17:47 smashing his previous best.
