Southern 100: Dunlop seals second Superbike victory of week

'I was caught behind Guy and when backmarkers came into it I just hammered away. I didn't really care what the rest of the boys did' - Michael Dunlop
Michael Dunlop claimed his second Superbike victory of the week at the Southern 100 after a late challenge to pip Tyco Suzuki's Guy Martin.

Dunlop, riding his Honda Legends Fireblade, eventually found a way past Martin, who was in control for six of the eight laps of the Senior race.

It was the Ulster rider's second triumph of the week after he won the 600/1000cc race on Tuesday evening at the Billown circuit on the Isle of Man.

Dunlop won by over two seconds from Martin and Dean Harrison on the RC Express Kawasaki, who set a new lap record for the race at 113.461mph.

Harrison had been battling for second place with Martin until he almost collided with a slower rider in the closing stages, slipping back to a lonely third.

However, the young prospect had the consolation of setting a new lap record for the Senior race at 113.461mph, with Dunlop claiming a race record in a total time of 18m 16.617s.

“It was better tonight but we've a bit to go yet and we're still struggling with some bits and pieces,” Dunlop told Manx Radio.

“We're making life hard work for ourselves but it's something the boys will be able to fix – we're going the right way.

“I was caught behind Guy and when backmarkers came into it I just hammered away. I didn't really care what the rest of the boys did.”

Martin, who finished third in Tuesday's 600/1000cc race, said overnight changes had made a difference to his GSX-R1000 Suzuki.
