Scarborough Gold Cup: Guy Martin seeking ninth triumph

Tyco Suzuki's Guy Martin is the man to beat at the 63rd Steve Henshaw Gold Cup meeting at Scarborough this month following his superb Ulster Grand Prix hat-trick
Man of the moment Guy Martin has an incredible ninth Gold Cup triumph in his sights at Scarborough this month.

The Tyco Suzuki rider dominated at the Ulster Grand Prix in August, claiming three victories including a double in the Superbike class.

Martin has a formidable record at the Oliver's Mount course, where he won the prestigious Gold Cup seven times in a row between 2003 and 2009.

He is undoubtedly the man to beat at the 63rd running of the Steve Henshaw Gold Cup meeting, which takes places from September 14-15, but an impressive line-up is packed with top class challengers.

Among them is Isle of Man TT star Michael Dunlop on his MD Racing Honda machines, plus the Padgett's HM Plant Honda pair of John McGuinness and Bruce Anstey.

William Dunlop is also on the entry list on the CD Racing Yamaha R6 and is one of the major contenders in the Supersport class.

Bradford's Dean Harrison will be keen to round off an impressive season in style on the RC Express Racing Kawasaki at the 2.43-mile circuit, while Jamie Hamilton on the Vauxhall KMR Kawasaki is another rising prospect who will to challenge for rostrum honours.

Welshman Ian Lougher has a remarkable tally of 131 victories at Oliver's Mount and the veteran can never be discounted as he compete at the venue for the final time before hanging up his racing leathers for good.

In the Supertwins class, Hamilton and Harrison plus Ivan Lintin are likely to go head to head for the spoils, with Lougher, Chris Palmer and William Dunlop the main protagonists in the 125cc category.
