NW200: Michael Dunlop on record Superbike pace

BMW's Michael Dunlop was under Alastair Seeley's 2010 Superbike lap record as the Ulster star claimed pole position for Saturday's feature races at the North West 200
Michael Dunlop cracked Alastair Seeley's four-year-old lap record as he lit up the Superbike qualifying session for the North West 200.

Dunlop scorched around the 8.9-mile 'Triangle' circuit in blazing sunshine to lap at 122.275mph on his final lap to clinch pole on the BMW Motorrad S1000RR for Saturday's two seven-lap feature races in Portrush.

Michael Rutter was also on the pace on the Bathams BMW at 121.384mph as the British Superbike rider qualified second ahead of Alastair Seeley on the Mar-Train Racing Kawasaki, who had held the top spot for much of the session.

Seeley's official Superbike lap record set in 2010 stands at 121.875mph.

It was an excellent day overall for Dunlop, who was fastest on his Superstock BMW machine and fourth in the Supertwin class.

On row two, Tyco Suzuki riders Guy Martin and William Dunlop were fourth and fifth fastest respectively with the effervescent Bruce Anstey taking sixth on the new-look Valvoline Padgett's Honda Fireblade as the trio each managed speeds in excess of 121mph.

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider Stuart Easton, whose sole focus is the Superbike class at the North West, was fastest through the speed trap at 201mph.

The Scottish rider is on row three in eighth position, with Manxman Conor Cummins also joining the reigning British Supersport champion after posting the seventh quickest time on the Honda Racing Fireblade.

Another BMW rider, Martin Jessopp on the Riders Motorcycles machine, was ninth.

Milwaukee Yamaha pair Josh Brookes and Ian Hutchinson finished outside the top ten in 12th and 13th respectively, along with John McGuinness, who is struggling with a wrist injury.

The Morecambe rider was 15th fastest on the Honda Racing Fireblade.
