TT2014: Runner-up Martin has no excuses

Guy Martin says he was beaten by the better man after finishing second to Michael Dunlop in the Superbike race at the Isle of Man TT
Tyco Suzuki's Guy Martin had no excuses after finishing as the runner-up to Michael Dunlop in the Superbike TT.

Martin, who was back on the rostrum at the iconic Mountain race for the first time since 2011, crossed the line 20 seconds down on Dunlop and tipped his hat to the Ulster rider afterwards.

“That was a good effort and I really enjoyed it but I suppose it's another second place,” said Martin, who has now claimed 14 podiums at the TT.

“The bike never missed a beat and the boys did a mega job today, but I have to take my hat off to Michael [Dunlop] as he's riding well.

“I knew Conor [Cummins] was catching me on the final lap and I actually thought I might have to re-pass Michael on the road and make an extra big effort, but I right enjoyed that. It's not even dinner time yet, so I suppose we can go do a day's work now.”

Martin's team-mate, William Dunlop, finished in sixth place on the GSX-R1000 and set his best ever TT lap of 130.239mph on lap six.

Lincolnshire rider Martin also recorded his quickest lap with a speed of 130.969mph on lap two.

Guy rode a fantastic race , he does not enjoy the luxury of a works BMW engine or Dunlop tyres , he was gracious to Dunlop after the race . Dunlop was not gracious to Bruce Anstey when he heard Anstey posted the first 132 mph lap ever. on the island. Dunlop was a lot less than gracious to his brother William when William beat him at the NW200 recently.Hope somebody else wins a race or two this week .Mickey D does not like to share his sweets with the other boys. But he is a fantastic road rider and barring mechanical gremlins will be extremely fast in the 1000 cc races. h Maybe is size will open a few opportunities to others in the lesser classes ,

Guy Martin is on a works suzuki and admitted the bike was probably better than what was out against him in the interview after the race. I can also remember his comments to Michael at the Ulster. That's the way it is with these guys. William is a gentleman but unfortunately has not got that 'do anything to win' personality. At times Michael comes across as an idiot but he can ride a bike and is exciting and that's what the fans love.
