Ulster GP: Johnson and Cummins ruled out of Dundrod

Gary Johnson and Conor Cummins will miss the Metzeler Ulster Grand at Dundrod through injury
International road racing contenders Gary Johnson and Conor Cummins have been ruled out of this week's Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix.

Ramsey man Cummins broke his forearm following a crash on the Jackson Racing Honda Supersport machine at the Southern 100 on the Isle of Man in July.

Cummins, a former outright lap record holder at Dundrod, has been in superb form this season, taking a fine runner-up finish behind Michael Dunlop in the Senior TT on the Honda Racing Fireblade.

Johnson also shone at the TT as the Lincolnshire rider claimed his second victory on the Smiths Triumph in the opening Supersport race.

However, he came off on the exit of Ramsey hairpin while holding second place on the first lap of the Superstock TT, suffering injuries including a broken collarbone, a broken shoulder and four chipped vertebrae.

Both riders had hoped to be fit enough to contest the final major international road race of the season but have been forced to concede defeat.

Ulster Grand Prix Clerk of the Course, Noel Johnston, said: “Obviously I'm disappointed and I was hopeful that both would have made it because it would have been a cracking field of riders, but there's not a thing we can do about it and it's beyond their control.

“They're both experienced enough to know that if they're not fit enough it's best to give it a miss and I certainly wouldn't want them out there either if they're not 100 per cent.”

A stellar entry includes last year's treble winner Guy Martin and team-mate William Dunlop on the Tyco Suzuki machines, plus Kiwi and current outright lap record holder Bruce Anstey on Clive Padgett's Hondas.

Milwaukee Yamaha's Ian Hutchison returns to the meeting for the first time since 2010 as he aims to salvage a disappointing season, while Bradford's Dean Harrison will be aiming to cause an upset on the RC Express Kawasaki and Mar-Train Yamaha machines.

Lee Johnston, Jamie Hamilton and Dan Kneen are also entered along with British championship riders Peter Hickman and Glenn Irwin, who will make their debuts at the event.

Practice gets underway on Wednesday with final qualifying plus the Dundrod 150 national meeting taking place on Thursday ahead of the main race showdown on Saturday.
