Ulster GP: Victorious Martin eager for more wins

Guy Martin expects to have a battle on his hands with Bruce Anstey as the Tyco Suzuki rider attempts to add to his 11 Ulster Grand Prix victories on Saturday
Tyco Suzuki's Guy Martin opened his account at this year's Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix with victory in the Dundrod 150 Superbike race on Thursday.

The 32-year-old fought out a thrilling battle with Valvoline Padgetts Honda rider Bruce Anstey and set the fastest lap of the race at 131.313mph to hold off the Kiwi and win by 0.242 seconds after five laps of the 7.4-mile circuit.

Martin's lap was only one second outside Anstey's four-year-old outright record of 133.977mph, raising expectations of a new benchmark on Saturday if conditions remain dry.

The Lincolnshire rider was delighted to kick off his 2014 Ulster Grand Prix challenge on a winning note but pointed out that the big races are yet to come.

“The TAS boys keep giving me a great Tyco Suzuki to ride and I'm just doing my job boy, just doing my job. But yeah, it's a good start to the week, although we've got a bigger job to do on Saturday,” said Martin.

“Bruce [Anstey] is riding bloody well and I think by today's result, its just going to be him and me on Saturday, but you never know what Michael [Dunlop] can turn up.

“The longer races will suit me and I've just got to keep the pressure on, but there's no safer man to ride with than Bruce,” he added.

“On the 600 I think I just need to man-up a bit, as you really need to wring the neck off the smaller bikes around Dundrod. I want a result on the GSX-R600, but it's the big class that takes priority with me here this weekend.”
