Ulster GP: Kneen edges Harrison in Superstock thriller

Dan Kneen wins Superstock race by 1000th of a second from Dean Harrison at Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix
Manx rider Dan Kneen is celebrating his maiden international road racing victory after winning the Superstock race at the Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix.

Kneen, Dean Harrison and Bruce Anstey broke away at the front and battled it out over the re-started five-lap race, which was stopped on lap two initially due to rain.

Cookstown B.E. Racing rider Kneen and Bradford rider Harrison on the RC Express Kawasaki swapped places throughout the race to set up a winner-takes-all final lap, with Kiwi Anstey always in touch in third.

Kneen held away at the Deer's Leap but Harrison had forged his way to the front ay Joey's Windmill as the two went head to head around the 7.4-mile circuit, with roads virtually dry barring a few damp patches below the trees.

Harrison hit back to seize the initiative once more at the Lindsay Hairpin, but it was Braddan man Kneen who just prevailed on the drive to the line to win by 1000th of a second in one of the closest ever Ulster Grand Prix finishes.

Anstey took third, but afterwards revealed he miscalculated the number of laps, while Ulsterman Stephen Thompson was fourth on the Bathams BMW.

Newcomer Peter Hickman finished in fifth place on the Ice Valley Racing BMW with Guy Martin rounding out the top six on the Tyco Suzuki.

Pole man Michael Dunlop made a terrible start on his BMW S1000RR but had moved up to fourth position before retiring at the end of lap three. Dunlop was bidding for his fourth win in a row in the Superstock class at Dundrod.

Pirtek Honda's Lee Johnston was also a retirement.
