Guy Martin: Tyco BMW deal stopped me from retiring

Roads favourite Guy Martin says he was set to retire until news of TAS Racing's deal with BMW Motorrad came to fruition
Road racing superstar Guy Martin says he was on the verge of retiring from the sport until TAS Racing struck a deal to be BMW Motorrad's official roads team in 2015.

The Lincolnshire rider, who is still chasing his maiden Isle of Man TT success, joins William Dunlop in an unchanged line-up for the North West 200, TT and Ulster Grand Prix next year to ride the new S1000-RR in the Superbike and Superstock classes.

Martin, though, says he was on the brink of calling time on his roads career at the age of 33 until news of the BMW deal came to light.

“Moving to BMW machinery is the reason I'm still racing next year and not retiring. I'll always give it my all and to be with a quality manufacturer like BMW is mega,” Martin said.

“I'm looking forward to getting on the bikes as soon as possible. It's a new bike and I've never ridden it before, but we all know its pedigree.

“TAS are the best team I've ever ridden for; they get me and I get them and we meet in the middle, which is why we've been successful and this new venture with BMW is just what we need going into next season.”

Martin is also yet to break his duck at the North West 200 but has a stellar record at the Southern 100 and Ulster Grand Prix in particular.

The TV presenter, truck mechanic and mountain bike fanatic is the most famous road racer of his generation and an elusive TT win next summer would be one of the most popular achievements ever witnessed in the history of the iconic Mountain races.
