Donald and Norton team up for TT 2015

Australian star will ride latest Norton SG3 in Superbike and Senior races at Isle of Man TT in second stint with British team
Aussie Cameron Donald will again compete for Norton at the 2015 Isle of Man TT.

Donald will ride the latest version of the SG3 in the RST Superbike and PokerStars Senior races, with Norton also retaining the services of Mick Grant and Steve Plater to continue the development of the machine this year.

Hailing from Warrandyte, near Melbourne, Donald won the TT Newcomers Trophy in 2005 and made his mark a year later when he took a stunning second place in the Senior TT. In 2008, he claimed a double in the Superbike and Superstock races and a year after became the first rider ever to lap the course at 131mph, achieving the feat during practice.

Donald has received permission from Norton to compete in another class at the TT this year in order to maintain bike sharpness and maximise his time on track, with an announcement due soon on his chosen ride.

“After a solid but frustrating 2014 where we made great progress with the bike but didn't show it's full potential, we all agreed to keep the team together for 2015,” Donald said.

“Norton have pushed hard within the factory over the winter; their engineering department have made many changes to SG3. With the enthusiasm and experience of the Norton team behind me and ex TT winners such as Mick Grant and Steve Plater involved again, we're all looking forward to a great TT.

“Norton is synonymous with the Isle of Man TT and I can't wait to ride the newly developed SG3 round the Mountain Course.”

Donald now has an impressive tally of ten TT podiums with his most recent coming in the 2013 Superbike race when he took second place behind Michael Dunlop. He is also the eighth fastest rider ever to lap the 37.73-mile Mountain Course, posting an average speed of 130.729mph.

Stuart Garner, CEO, Norton Motorcycles, added: “Cameron did a great job for us last year, both in riding talent and development work with the factory. The continuity a further year with the identical team cannot be under estimated. It's a huge ask to build a bike from scratch to compete against the world's best road racers, the world's best bikes at the world's toughest race.

“To do this we need world-class talent and in Cameron we have this. We also get a great brand ambassador for Norton, his support, feedback and presence within the team are hugely important to us, both as a company and a race team.”

I don't want to be negative and am a great fan of the Norton brand, but I don't quite see how a bike with a non-Norton engine, non-Norton suspension, non-Norton brakes, non-Norton wheels, non-Norton electronics, non-Norton frame, non-Norton tyres etc etc etc can be seen as a Norton. Which bit is Norton?

It's not the Norton I'm bothered about, I'm more bothered about the fact that a double TT winner with several other podiums and the first ever 131mph lap of the course is once again riding a bag of spanners. He's well worth a Padgetts ride or even team up with Wilson Craig again.
