Southern 100: Martin crowned Solo Champion

Tyco BMW's Guy Martin has won the Solo Championship race at the Southern 100 for the third time in succession to join Joey Dunlop as the only riders to achieve the feat.
Guy Martin successfully retained his Solo Championship title in the feature race of the week at the Southern 100.

It was Martin's third successive victory in the race as the Tyco BMW rider defeated Dan Kneen on the Valvoline Padgetts Honda by 0.7 seconds after nine laps of the 4.25-mile Billown course.

Martin joins Joey Dunlop as the only riders to have won the blue riband event three times on the trot, with Dunlop victorious in 1976, '77 and '78.

Michael Dunlop had been lying in third place on his MD Racing BMW until the Ulster rider slid off at Ballabeg on the third lap.

Martin led on every one of the nine laps but could not break Manxman Kneen in second place, who shadowed the BMW rider until he lost ground on the penultimate lap when the leading pair encountered slower riders.

Lincolnshire rider Martin gained a slight cushion and although Kneen managed to edge closer on the final lap, he was unable to mount a challenge for the win.

The pair were a long way head of RC Express Kawasaki's Ivan Lintin in a lonely third, with Russ Mountford finishing fourth ahead of James Cowton and Jamie Coward.

A jubilant Martin, who sealed a Superbike brace following his win in the Senior Race on Tuesday, said: “It was mint – what a day for it. We put the bike in the van, came over here on Monday morning and worked out the back of the van.

“I've right enjoyed it and it's sweet, sweet. We didn't have a lot of dry time on the bike so we made a couple of little changes from this morning and just kept her steady,” he added.

“No-one tried to put a wheel under me and I just kept on doing what I was doing. I kept it tight on the last lap and it's mega.”

Kneen felt his chance was gone after he was held up slightly by slower riders, enabling Martin to steal a march.

“I was saving it for the last lap but I got caught up with one guy on lap eight and Guy got through at Iron Gate,” Kneen said.

“I caught him up a bit and then on the last lap there was another one and that was it then – I ran out of time.

“The bike was brilliant though and thanks to the Padgetts boys for coming over, they did a great job.”

Earlier, Lightweight TT winner Ivan Lintin completed a Supertwins brace on the RC Express Kawasaki, taking his second win of the week by almost eight seconds from James Cowton, with Jamie Coward a further 10 seconds behind in third.
