UGP: Martin revels in big Dundrod victory
13 August 2012
Tyco Suzuki's Guy Martin finally claimed his first major international road racing victory of 2012 in Saturday's feature Ulster Grand Prix Superbike race.
Martin, a winner in the premier class a year ago at Dundrod, capitalised on chief rival Michael Dunlop's crash at the Lindsay Hairpin on the sixth of seven laps to earn a coveted success in the blue riband event.
The duo had been locked in a spectacular confrontation for honours after pulling clear of the rest of the field and the scene was set for an electrifying final lap face-off.
However, Dunlop appeared to tuck the front end on his Hunts Motorcycles/McAdoo Honda at the hairpin, leaving Martin clear from Gary Johnson on Clive Padgett's Honda, with Conor Cummins making it two Tyco Suzuki machines on the rostrum in the main race of the day.
A delighted Martin said: "Me and Michael have been having some right ding-dongs since the Southern 100 really.
“He's been on it, but we made some little changes to the bike and that let us go a little bit further.
“I got past Gary [Johnson] and I just tried to plug away but I knew I had some work on with Michael.
“He passed me and I got him back at Wheeler's and then he crashed at the hairpin,” added Martin, who was celebrating his first big international victory since he won the second Superbike race at the Ulster GP a year ago.
“It's been a great week at Dundrod and it's always the job to win the main Ulster Grand Prix Superbike race.
“I did my best in the second Superbike race to also take the win but if you're going to win one at Dundrod, the main race is the most important.
“No one comes to win the 'B' race do they? It's nice to reward them with the main race win.”
Martin also collected the 'man of the meeting' award.
Johnson finished 5.4 seconds in arrears in second, with Cummins almost 14 seconds behind his team-mate, but comfortably ahead of Anstey in fourth.
Northern Ireland pair Ryan Farquhar and Adrian Archibald completed the first six.
Dunlop had the consolation of the fastest lap of the race at 133.264mph.
