TT2014: McGuinness boosted by battling sixth

6 June 2014

John McGuinness has no doubt he could've challenged for Senior glory at the Isle of Man TT had the Morecambe rider been fully fit.

McGuinness battled a wrist injury during the 2014 meeting but still managed to win the TT Zero race to boost his tally of wins to 21.

The 42-year-old finished a gallant sixth on the Honda Fireblade in the Senior race and has already vowed to come back for more in 2015.

McGuinness, who lapped at 129.367mph from a standing start, said: “I'm happy with today's result and it's nice to end the week with a good, strong performance on the Superbike. It was always going to be tough and by the middle of race week, it was getting harder and harder, race after race.

“Opting out of Wednesday's Supersport race gave me that little bit of rest I needed and it made a big difference so I set off in a good frame of mind today.

“Considering everything that's happened, we've achieved a lot of things here on the island and to finish inside the top six in both the Superbike and Senior is no disgrace,” he added.

“If I was 100 per cent fit, I'm sure I could have given the boys a run for their money as I've done the speeds before and there's no reason why I can't do them again.

“Even to start the race was like a win, given I was flat out on the rocks two months ago, so a big thank-you to everyone for their support.”
