Dunlop denies Martin in Superbike finale at Armoy

26 July 2014

Michael Dunlop denied Guy Martin a treble at the Armoy Road Races as the BMW star stormed to a comfortable victory in the feature Superbike race.

Dunlop had to settle for second place behind his Tyco Suzuki rival in the wet opening Superbike race, but the 11-time Isle of Man TT winner came good in the prestigious 'Race of Legends' to sign off on a high.

The Ballymoney man fought his way through after a less than perfect start to hit the front at the half-way point of the race, taking over from Lincolnshire favourite Martin.

With dry and sunny conditions prevailing after heavy rain caused a delay earlier in the programme, Dunlop easily clocked the fastest lap of the day on his Superstock S1000RR at 105.992mph to pull away from Martin.

He went on to win by more than three seconds at the line, with Manx rider Dan Kneen holding off William Dunlop to take an excellent third place on the Cookstown B.E. Racing Suzuki.

Martin – who had won also won the rain-lashed Supersport race earlier in the day to seal a brace – will renew his rivalry with Dunlop in an eagerly anticipated clash at the Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix at Dundrod on August 16.
