Dennis takes British Junior title

6 September 2010

One year after narrowly losing the British Junior Karting crown to Alex Albon Jake Dennis provisionally sealed the 2010 title with a win and a second place in the penultimate round of the championship at Whilton Mill.

Racing Steps Foundation backed driver Dennis can now afford to miss the final round of the series at PFI and still take the championship as, on dropped scores, his nearest rival Ben Barnicoat, is more than 100 points behind him with only 100 left on offer.

Dennis arrived at the taxing 1100-metre Whilton Mill circuit knowing that he needed to outscore Barnicoat in order to provisionally seal the deal before the final round.

In the first rain-lashed KF3 final Dennis had to give best to eventual winner Jake Dalton, who led from start to finish after outfoxing polesitter Matthew Graham at the start. But significantly for Dennis, Barnicoat could only finish fifth, some thirteen seconds behind his main title rival with Roy Johnson and Charlie Eastwood separating the pair in third and fourth.

With conditions dry for the second final Dennis was in his element and grabbed the lead on the opening lap as polesitter Dalton tumbled down the order. But Barnicoat wasn't going to give up without a fight and was soon on Dennis' bumper with Charlie Robertson making it a three way dice for the lead.

On several occasions Barnicoat was able to pass Dennis but Dennis was always able to find a gap and retake the lead, finally taking the lead for good at half distance. Even then Barnicoat refused to concede and finished just three tenths of a second behind the champion elect after 21 laps of hard fought action.

Robertson took third, less than a second behind Dennis with series rookie Callum O'Keeffe a strong fourth and Dubai based driver Edward Jones rounding out the top five.

Despite watching Dennis provisionally seal the title Barnicoat is still hot favourite to take the runner-up spot as Dalton could only finish seventh in the second final.
