Starworks continues to strengthen 2014 USSC line-up

Renger van der Zander joins Sam Bird and Rob Huff in expanding all-star line-up at US team ahead of 2014 sportscar season.
Former single-seater ace Renger van der Zande has been added to the Starworks team for its assault on this month's Daytona 24 Hours and the new Tudor United Sports Car Competition beyond that.

Although he remains focused on sprint racing with Mercedes in Europe, the Dutchman will add longer distances to his 2014 schedule having agreed to drive the US-based team's Oreca-Chevrolet in the Le Mans Prototype class in the USCC which was formed by the merger of Grand-Am and ALMS.

Partnered by Starworks regular Mirco Schultis, van der Zande will compete in all ten USCC races under the Mishumotors by Starworks entry, and will be joined by 2013 GP2 Series runner-up Sam Bird for the season's longer races. The duo hope to build on their 2013 ALMS successes as they partner 2012 WTCC champion Rob Huff and Spaniard Isaac Tutumlu under the Starworks awning.

“After testing this autumn, signing Renger was an easy decision,” team owner Peter Baron commented, “He brings top European talent into the team. His experience in F3, DTM and GT racing and his team spirit are evident. With Renger and the programme we're doing, we are the strongest on the grid in 2014. And with Sam Bird and Rob Huff on board too, I've got an excellent formation for the coming season.”

“I'm delighted to have been contracted for this season's long-distance races,” van der Zande added, “I love racing in the United States, and can easily combine this programme with my work at Gullwing Racing Insurance in Europe. I'm particularly looking forward to working with the very strong Starworks Motorsport team and team-mate Mirco Schultis - professionalism and fun go together well with Mirco.”

The Daytona 24 Hours takes place over the weekend of 25-26 January.
