GAINSCO squad pulls plug on USCC programme

The GAINSCO-backed Bob Stallings Racing team elects to withdraw from the United SportsCar Championship on the back of its heavy shunt in the Rolex 24 at Daytona
The GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing team has announced that it is to end its planned programme in the new TUDOR United SportsCar Championship following the accident that destroyed the #99 Corvette DP during the season opener at Daytona.

Driver Memo Gidley was left with multiple injuries after the incident in the early part of the Rolex 24 Hours, when he slammed into the rear of the Ferrari of Matteo Malucelli after a mechanical issue forced the Italian to slow on track.

Having originally planned to compete in the longer endurance events that will make up the Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Championship, the team has instead now elected to withdraw from the series citing the 'strain of Gidley's recovery, combined with the destruction of the team's primary vehicle and the financial requirements to continue' as the reasons for its decision.

While the team plans to work on returning to action in 2015, drivers Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty have been released from their contracts to seek opportunities elsewhere, while the crew responsible for running the car are also now free to seek alternative employment.

“It is with great regret that we will have to suspend operations for the balance of the 2014 season,” team owner Bob Stallings said. “Since Daytona, priority one for us has been on Memo's recovery. Everyone on the team has been focused on his care and comfort, and it has meant the world to see such support from the fans and the racing community at large.

“Even though Memo has a long road ahead, the worst is behind him, and it has allowed us to step back and take a look at the programme at large. With both the personal and economic strain this has put on us, we feel it's in the best interest of everyone to sit out this year, with a firm focus on a return in 2015.”
