Porsche quickest in first LMP1 showdown

Mark Webber and Porsche top the first official World Endurance test at Paul Ricard, ahead of its Audi and Toyota rivals.
Sportscar racing returnees Porsche have come out of the blocks quickest following the first official test ahead of the 2014 World Endurance Championship at Paul Ricard.

The first time the 919 Hybrid has gone up against its rivals from Audi and Toyota, Porsche would come out quickest after two days of testing in France, though it would remain fairly closely matched between the 'big three'.

The car shared by former F1 driver Mark Webber, Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley emerged fastest of all, with the latter Kiwi turning in the fastest time of 1min 41.289secs.

Audi finished the 'Prologue' with the second fastest time over the course of the two days with its R18 e-tron Quattro courtesy of Marcel Fassler, Benoit Treluyer and Andre Lotterer, with the second of the Porsches third best with Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb doing driving duties.

Toyota's top entrant came from the No.7 TS040 Hybrid of Alex Wurz, Stephane Sarrazin and Kazuki Nakajima in fourth, just over a second off the ultimate. Rebellion Racing, with its non-Hybrid Toyota powered cars followed three and five seconds adrift in the LMP1 class.

In LMP2, Shinya Nakano was quickest in the Oreca 03-Nissan, while the Porsche Team Manthey squad of Marco Holzer, Frederic Makowiecki and Richard Lietz paced the LMGT Pro class.

Fellow Porsche trio Francois Perrodo, Emanuel Collard and Matthieu Vaxiviere fastest of the LMGT Am drivers.

The opening round of the eight-event 2014 WEC begins with the Silverstone 6 Hours on April 20.
