WEC: Rebellion rolls out new LMP1 contender

Rebellion Racing offers a first look at its new LMP1 contender for the 2014 World Endurance Championship during a test at Paul Ricard.
Rebellion Racing's new contender for the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship has broken cover during a private test at Paul Ricard.

The Swiss team will compete in its own LMP1-L sub-category this season designed to attract more privateer teams a top tier that is otherwise dominated by the 'big three' manufacturer entries from Audi, Toyota and Porsche.

For 2014, Rebellion Racing will enter a pair of Toyota-engined ORECA chassis – the R-One - though the late rollout for the new car means the team will stick with its existing Lola chassis for this weekend's WEC opener at Silverstone.

Shaken down by Martin Beche at Paul Ricard, the car will undergo a full testing programme ahead of its mooted competition debut at Spa-Francorchamps.

"The Rebellion R-One has turned its first laps and we are absolutely delighted by that,” said Rebellion manager Bart Hayden. “After many months of dedicated focus and design effort, the past few weeks have seen an incredible input by the ORECA personnel and members of the Rebellion Racing team.

“Our mechanics have been in the ORECA factory for the past few weeks without a break and so the running of the car is a great reward for all the hard work. Congratulations are due to everyone that has been involved in this project, but particularly to the design team led by Christophe Guibbal and the Rebellion mechanics led by Garry Richardson.

“Our mechanics are now catching the next plane back to England to be at Silverstone for this weekend's FIA WEC opening race of the season and we will all be coming back to Paul Ricard next week after that race for a full test of the R-One cars."

Ex-F1 driver Nick Heidfeld will lead the driver line-up in one entry, while reigning GP2 Series champion Fabio Leimer will drive the other.

Despite the late debut of the new car, Rebellion Racing will go uncontested in the LMP1-L class at Silverstone following the withdrawal of the Lotus entry.
