WEC Shanghai: ESM to double up for China WEC outing

Extreme Speed Motorsports will compete in the Shanghai 6 Hours next month with two LMP2 entries following a successful debut WEC outing in Austin.
Extreme Speed Motorsports says it is already planning to focus its attentions on the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours, beginning with the decision to skip the Petit Le Mans in favour of another doubled up World Endurance Championship outing.

The American-based team made its WEC debut at the Circuit of the Americas last week, dovetailing its appearance with its regular entry in the supporting American-based United SportsCar Championship event.

However, ESM has now signalled its plans to get all the way to Le Mans in 2015 by beginning its preparations with another WEC outing in Shanghai, China next month with two three-man entries. As a result of this, it will not compete in the USCC finale at Road Atlanta, the Petit Le Mans.

After finishing third in the LMP2 class with the Honda-engined HPD prototype at CotA, ESM says the decision to focus its efforts on WEC will aid its cause when it comes to securing a Le Mans entry.

“This weekend was a good test for us with the FIA WEC,” said team manager Ed Brown, who also confirmed ESM will still race full-time in the USA next year. “We're committed to going to the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year.

“I feel it is important for us to pick the absolute hardest race that the team could do, and that means racing in China; there's language, food and logistics issues, among other challenges. If we truly want to be competitive at Le Mans or any other WEC race, we need to get our hands around the series and regulations at one of the most demanding locations. The best thing we can do is throw a challenge at the team. We're going to learn so much in the week in China; it will pay huge dividends.

“We're excited but know there is a give and take,” continued Brown. “Racing is expensive and because of that we'll park the cars at Petit Le Mans and not run the final race of the TUDOR Championship series so we can setup the cars for Shanghai. By all means, we're going to be racing in the United States next year, but we felt that this was important to set us up for the goals that we've set."

Ryan Dalziel and Scott Sharp will be joined by Le Mans LMP2 champion Rodolfo Gonzalez in the #30 car, while Brown, Johannes van Overbeek and David Brabham will share the #31 machine.
