WEC: SMP plots own LMP2 chassis entry

SMP Racing could campaign its own-developed LMP2 car in next year's FIA World Endurance Championship.
Leading LMP2 team SMP Racing has given a first glimpse of the self-developed prototype it may race in next year's FIA World Endurance Championship.

The Russian-financed outfit has established itself as a leading figure in sportscar competition in recent seasons, enjoying title-winning success in the GT class of the European Le Mans Series, whilst its LMP2 team is currently heading the WEC standings with Sergey Zlobin.

Going forward, however, SMP Racing has begun developing its own LMP2 machine built to the latest generation closed-coupe blueprint.

Designed by Paolo Catone, who penned the Peugeot 908 HDi and developed in France by BR Engineering, the BR01 will get its first laps in December, according to founder Boris Rotenberg

"The BR01, which will begin competing next season, will be presented very soon. It has been designed by Paolo Catone [designer of the Peugeot 908], and will be built by BR Engineering. From early on, we have wanted to produce our own car. While the team has been based until now in Italy, we will now be based in the south of France, near Luc."

“The goal is to grow and move the team forward over time. The first stage is the LMP2, but that's not to say we won't step up to LMP1 in the longer term. For the moment, we are fully focused on the development of the BR01, and its first laps are scheduled for December.

“There is still a lot of work to do with various partners. The car is designed to appeal to gentlemen drivers, bearing in the mind that the LMP2 category is the playground of such drivers who must feel comfortable in the cockpit."

It is yet to be decided whether SMP Racing will run the BR01 in ELMS or WEC next season
