WEC: LMP2 title battle goes to the wire

G-Drive move to the top of the FIA World Endurance Championship standings by eight points after late heartbreak for Sergey Zlobin in Bahrain.
With the LMP1, GTE Pro and GTE Am drivers' titles all being decided in Bahrain, only the LMP2 class will go down to the wire in Brazil after a dramatic race in Bahrain saw Sergey Zlobin fall 15 minutes short of a critical result.

SMP Racing's Zlobin began the race with a slender eight point advantage over the G-Drive Ligier Nissan trio of Olivier Pla, Roman Rusinov and Julien Canal, but stood to make gains when his rivals were hampered by mechanical issues early on brought about by first lap contact.

With the G-Drive car three laps off the LMP2 lead, Zlobin and team-mates Nicolas Minassian and Marco Mediani embarked on a fight for the class win with the KCMG Oreca Nissan. The result would have all-but-guaranteed Zlobin the title, only for his Nissan-engine to expire with just 15mins of the race to go, dropping the car out of the race.

With G-Drive recovering to fourth place in class, Pla, Rusinov and Canal now head to the 2014 finale at Interlagos with the advantage by eight points.

“It just goes to show that it's never truly over,” said former GP2 driver Pla. “It's in these extremely difficult moments that you realise you have a good team. I'll be giving it my all right up until the chequered flag in Sao Paulo to be able to give this title to my beloved team.”

Zlobin is the only driver in the SMP line-up able to win the title after he was separated from his team-mates for the double-points Le Mans 24 Hours and scored the better result.
