Rolex 24: Ganassi quickest, DeltaWing impresses

Chip Ganassi Racing opens up quickest in the 'Road Before 24' test at Daytona, ahead of the Michael Shank Ligier and the DeltaWing.
The Chip Ganassi Riley Ford has opened up the 2015 Rolex 24 at Daytona on top after leading both 'Roar Before 24' practice sessions at the Daytona International Speedway.

The #01 machine of Scott Pruett, Joey Hand, Charlie Kimball and Sage Karam ended the day with a best lap of 1min 38.397secs – courtesy of Hand - around the Florida circuit, putting it two tenths clear of team-mates Scot Dixon and Tony Kanaan, who were quickest in FP1 and second overall at the end of the day.

Third fastest at the end of the day was the leading 'P2' prototype machine of Michael Shank Racing, with its newly-acquired Ligier JS P2 – running with a Honda engine – less than two tenths adrift of the overall pace.

Notably, the unique DeltaWing machine put in a fine performance in the hands of Gabby Chaves the Colombian taking the team to third quickest in FP2 and fourth overall. He will share the car with three-time Rolex 24 at Daytona winner Memo Rojas, Katherine Legge and Andy Meyrick.

Elsewhere, the new HPD ARX-04b had an indifferent start to competitive life, with the ESM car of Ryan Dalziel, Scott Sharp and David Heinemeier-Hansson failing to set a time in FP2.

In the GT classes, Nick Tandy set the fastest time in FP2 for Porsche, but it was the Aston Martin of Pedro Lamy that ended the day with the quickest time overall. The former F1 driver will be sharing the car with Paul Dalla Lana, Mathias Lauda and Darren Turner.

In the GTD class, the Riley Dodge Viper SRT dominated, locking out the top two positions, while Renger van der Zande placed the Starworks Oreca top of the PC class.
