Rolex 24: Ligier JS P2 chassis impresses at test

The 'Roar before the 24' saw the first public test for Michael Shank Racing's newly-acquired, Honda-powered Ligier JS P2
Michael Shank has declared himself happy with his newly-acquired Ligier JS P2 following testing for the 2015 Rolex 24 at Dyatona, Honda-engined machine producing consistently strong lap times.

It was the first public outing for the new chassis in the United Sports Car Championship, with Krohn Racing and Michael Shank Racing using the Ligier in their all-new set-ups. Both teams were supported by Onroak Automotive at the Daytona International Speedway track as they prepared for the Rolex 24-hour race.

The Ligier LS P2 made its debut last year and impressed a number of private teams across various championships. As a result, the Ligier is expected to feature heavily at the Rolex 24 and in this season's WEC, ELMS and USCC series.

The teams used all eight sessions, which included different conditions and weathers, to get to know the prototype and were delighted with the progress made over the three days in Florida.

The Michael Shank Racing entry, which will run with a Honda engine, will be headed by a crew of John Pew Oswaldo Negri Jr, AJ Allmendinger and Matt McMurry.

Finding success with the Ligier JS P2 almost immediately, the team set the second best time in the LMP2/DP category in the second and third sessions and the best time in the fourth session.

Michael Shank, team manager of his self-titled team, said the experience was a big learning process for his team and he gave a glowing report after the tests.

“I've been pleasantly surprised with how good the car is and how well prepared it is,” Shank said. “We've had little issues, but nothing ever slowed us down.”

“The Onroak Automotive folks were amazingly accommodating to us and made sure we had what we needed, when we needed. But on top of that, they've built a car that everybody just loves to drive.”

The Rolex 24 at Daytona is held between 23-25 January and the teams will use the next two weeks to iron out any final problems.

Michael Shank is confident his car will challenge at the front end of the race in the LM P2 category.

“I think we are very competitive so that's good,” Shank added. “We need to make sure the car is reliable but I think we have a chance to win the race.”
