Rolex 24: Deltawing 'can win' Daytona 24 - Rojas

Three-time Rolex 24 winner Memo Rojas believes DeltaWing has improved to the extent that it can challenge for victory in the round-the-clock race.
Three-time Rolex 24 winner Memo Rojas has warned his new team DeltaWing Racing about the dangers of Daytona, but firmly believes he can lead the unique machine to an unexpected victory.

The four-time US sports car series champion has joined DeltaWing Racing from Chip Ganassi Racing, and has finished on the podium in five of the past seven years at the prestigious 24-hour endurance race at Daytona.

With intimate knowledge of the race and a car that showed promise during the Roar Before 24 test, he is setting high targets for the DeltaWing team.

“There is so much preparation that goes into this race. You probably overtake more people in this race than you do all year,” Rojas said. “It's a very rewarding race to win, especially after all the hard work. We have a very quick car and I expect that we can win this race.”

Hunting its first victory at this level, Rojas will be joined by long-serving DeltaWing drivers Andy Meyrick and Katherine Legge, as well as 2014 Indy Lights champion Gabby Chaves.

After the 'Roar before the 24' test sessions the team finished just 0.3 seconds off the leader's pace before their car suffered damage and had to be withdrawn.

“Obviously, it doesn't depend 100 percent on us; lady luck and good work by the whole team are very important,” Rojas added. “There's really good driver talent here and we have a car that can compete. We just need to stay out of trouble, which is the difficult part of this race.”

The DeltaWing team found out just how tough the race can be in 2014 after they suffered a mechanical failure and had to retire with only a third of the race completed. This year, Legge is hoping to avoid another frustrating race at Daytona.

“We did well here last year, qualifying seventh, but this year we should have even more speed and, hopefully, more reliability,” Legge said. “I think if we're there at the end we'll be in with a shot to win it.”
