WEC: Audi name Rockenfeller as LMP1 reserve driver

Former Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller has been announced as Audi's LMP1 reserve driver replacing Marc Gene who has departed to Nissan
Mike Rockenfeller has been announced as Audi's LMP1 squad reserve driver ahead of this season's Le Mans 24 Hours race.

Rockenfeller, a winner at the world famous race in 2010, is set to contest another full season in DTM with Audi Sport Team Phoenix after finishing third in the championship last season. The 31-year-old replaces Marc Gene in the reserve driver position after the Spaniard switched to Nissan as the Japanese manufacturer returns to the WEC.

There had been rumours the German driver would come into the Audi endurance driver team on a full-time basis after nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen retired at the end of last season. But the 2013 DTM champion has opted to continue in the German Touring Car series for 2015.

The possibility of competing in both series was always unlikely because of the WEC Spa race clashing with the DTM season opener in Hockenheim on the 2-3rd May. The Le Mans test day also clashes with the second round of the DTM seasin in Brandenburg.

Despite Rockenfeller choosing DTM, the German driver hasn't ruled out the possibility committing to endurance racing on a full-time basis in the future.

"I'm in a good position in the DTM and I think my chances will be good this year," Rockenfeller explained. "I didn't want to give up without winning the championship again. It is my goal is to race in the WEC one day."

Rockenfeller will continue to race in America with the Spirit of Daytona Prototype team for three rounds of the United SportsCar Championship in a Coyote-Chevrolet Corvette DP.
