USCC: DeltaWing Racing confident gearbox gremlins are gone

DeltaWing Racing believe it has solved its gearbox problems which caused a premature end to its Rolex 24 Hour race in Daytona last month
DeltaWing Racing believe it has solved its gearbox problems which caused a premature end to its Rolex 24 Hour race in Daytona last month.

The team received an updated EMCO gearbox just days before the Rolex 24 at Daytona and with only one day of testing possible the team had to fight against a series of issues that limited the car's track time at Daytona.

Despite the lack of track time, the team qualified fifth and ran among the leaders for the first 90 minutes of the race, before gearbox issues struck again, ruling them out the race.

The team returns in a buoyant mood with Memo Rojas, Katherine Legge and Andy Meyrick at the wheel of the Claro/TracFone DeltaWing Racing coupe for round two of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

Rojas is certain the team has ironed out the gearbox problems with EMCO and finally feels ready to go racing.

“One of the top priorities after Daytona was to make sure we'd fixed the gearbox issues,” Rojas said. “The team, working with EMCO, did a tremendous job getting everything sorted. The test was flawless; the gearbox was fine. We really didn't have any issues.”

The problem-free test enabled each driver sufficient time to get to grips with the car, and Rojas says he was surprised at the level of performance the DeltaWing produced, filling him with confidence ahead of the 12 Hour race in Sebring this weekend.

“Before this test, I had run maybe 10 laps in the DeltaWing, so this was a great chance for me to get more acquainted with the car,” he explained. “I keep getting surprised by the great performance this car has – the technology really has been proven, we just need to work hard to have it show on the track.

“We ran in the wet and in the dry, and we were able to make some setup changes that helped me get more from the car. Because the car is so light, it doesn't lose grip under hard braking in the wet like some of the other prototypes, so I hope we get to race in the rain at some point.”
