The 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship provisional calendar has been released, with the 6 Hours of Mexico City added as a new round to the existing schedule.

The majority of the 2016 WEC calendar follows on from the success of the current season with the Prologue run on the 25-26 March at the Circuit Paul Ricard before the season opener at Silverstone on the 17th April.

The blue riband Le Mans 24 Hours remains in the middle of June, 18-19 June, while the skeleton of the rest of the season follows the course of 2015.

In addition to the eight existing rounds an additional race has been added in Mexico with the date and confirmation still to be signed off as the contract is yet to be completed.

Pierre Fillon, President of l'Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), and Gerard Neveu, WEC CEO, revealed the 2016 calendar ahead of the 6 Hours of the Circuit of the Americas race.

Both organisations have wholeheartedly thrown its support behind the Mexico event joining the WEC calendar and expect the contract to be completed within the coming weeks.

"We believe that the time is right to expand the WEC," Fillon said. "The nine-race calendar for 2016 allows us to continue to build the tradition of 6-hour events in the countries we visit, some of which were not so familiar with endurance racing when we began in 2012."

"The opportunity offered by Mexico City to take endurance racing back to Latin America was the right one at the right time," Neveu added. "We are looking forward to welcoming Ford back to top level GTE racing in 2016, and we are confident that Aston Martin, Ferrari and Porsche are equally excited about their entry.

"We have worked with the teams and circuits to reduce the long summer gap following Le Mans, and this new calendar will keep the action going through the summer."

The calendar is subject to validation by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
