Patrick Dempsey has withdrawn from racing in the 2016 World Endurance Championship and Le Mans in order to 'focus on family and acting career'.

The American driver, who set up and owns Dempsey Racing-Proton which competes in the GTE Am category in WEC and at Le Mans, claimed a maiden victory last year at Fuji which capped a memorable campaign having finished runner-up in class at the Le Mans 24 Hours to take sixth place overall at the end of the year.

Dempsey's squad will continue to race a Porsche 911 RSR in WEC but the 50-year-old will step away from driving duties to focus on his family and acting career.

Dempsey has recently finished filming the US hit series Grey's Anatomy while also reconciling with his wife Jillian Fink who had filed for divorce in January 2015. On his personal website Dempsey said:

"At this point in my life, after an amazing season thanks to my friends at Porsche and TAG Heuer, I need to take a step back and focus on both my family and my acting career," he wrote. "Dempsey Proton Racing will continue on racing a Porsche 911 RSR in the World Endurance Championship season. I hope my schedule permits me to enjoy some race weekends as a team owner."

totally agree Sasha seems lie this is old news Crash couple months ago maybe?

McQueen and Newman were big in Movies over and over they won in motorsports over and over for a long time, Dempsey came at a much different time McQueen and Newman had winning rides offered to them Dempsey had to build his own team. he did pretty well at the level he could afford ..I don't think we will ever see actors of their level who could win a world championship level race overall driving a non factory car as McQueen and Newman could I met them both and they were both fine guys I would have loved to go dirt bike or road racing motorcycles with either of them !
