Porsche unwraps 2016 WEC effort

Porsche has unveiled its revised 919 Hybrid LMP1 car which will be run to defend the drivers' and manufacturers' titles in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

After a steep learning curve during its debut campaign in 2014, Porsche achieved its goal of WEC domination last season taking a total of six wins, including at the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours, as the driver trio of Mark Webber, Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard claimed the title.

For 2016, Porsche has adopted the unconventional strategy of producing three unique aerodynamic packages to ensure its car is best suited to the different characteristic of race tracks it will face throughout the season. The German manufacturer has also found significant weight loss on its four-cylinder turbo engine and fuel consumption reduction, while improving the efficiency of its hybrid drive system.

As well as an increase in efficiency, Porsche has also upped the power output from its electric drive for the front axle, power electronics and new lithium-ion battery cells. An updated front axle has also enabled the team to develop its set-up options.

Porsche has retained the same driver line-up from 2015 with Webber, Hartley and Bernhard taking up the newly-plated #1 car, while Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb will be at the wheel of the #2 919 Hybrid.

I have to admit .. I do get a little flutter of the heart and twinge of excitement when new WEC cars are launched/ unveiled nowadays.... Sadly, it makes me realise how little emotion is stirred in me when F1 's new cars are shown-off.........
