Aston’s double, Harvey’s Cadet title
6 September 2010
Nathan Aston took a superb double Cadet victory in the penultimate round of the Super One Championship at Whilton Mill but it was Tom Harvey who was celebrating afterwards after two more solid finishes provisionally gave him the 2010 title.
Aston surged to the front of the first point scoring final, trading the lead with the impressive Daniel Ticktum before pulling out a slender one second lead by the end of 16-laps around the tough, physically demanding Whilton circuit near Daventry.
Polesitter Ticktum consolidated his best finish of the year in second, four seconds ahead of champion elect Harvey, who overcame stiff resistance from Philip Rawson, Ross Gunn, Jordan Gilbertson and Connor Jupp to complete the podium and take another huge step towards the title.
Max Vaughan, Harvey's closest rival, could only manage a 16th place finish having been mired in the midfield scrap all race.
In the second final Aston led from start to finish with Harvey closely in tow after Ticktum spun on the opening lap. Knowing that second would all but seal the title Harvey didn't risk a lunge on the leader and followed Aston home just six hundredths behind, the lead duo having comfortably pulled away from the rest of the field.
After his sub par outing in the first final Vaughan charged through the field from 16th on the grid to third in the second final, passing Rawson and Gunn in the closing stages to maintain second place in the championship, albeit an insurmountable distance behind Harvey.
With just the final round of the championship to go Harvey can afford to use the two point scoring finals at PFI as his two dropped scores and neither Vaughan nor Gunn, who sit second and third respectively, can overhaul him even if they take a perfect points total from the weekend.
