Fightback rewarded for Johnson, Davison
10 June 2008
Jim Beam Racing's Steve Johnson and Will Davison staged a remarkable fightback during Monday's two V8 Supercar races at Sandown Raceway, both able to push their Jim Beam Falcons through the field to score valuable points.
Both drivers proved brilliant in the wet conditions that plagued the day's opening race, finishing fifth and eleventh respectively having started from 13th and 29th on the grid.
Johnson's Falcon was the fastest car in the field for a number of laps as the track dried late on, while Davison picked up a staggering 18 positions to rescue his weekend having started from the rear of the grid. He had qualified third on Sunday only to run into problems in race one.
"I knew I had some work ahead of me starting from the rear of the grid, but I needed to salvage something from the weekend after yesterday's disappointment," Davison noted, "To work my way back and finish the final race in seventh is very pleasing, I'll look to carry that into Darwin and gain some ground back in the series standings."
While Davison continued his climb through the field in race three - going from eleventh on the gird to seventh by the flag - Johnson finished three places shy of his colleague, securing 170 points to improve his series standing to twelfth overall. Davison bagged 112 points for the round and still sits inside the top ten on the points table.
"I think the wet conditions in the day's first race really suited me and to score fifth position was just a fantastic result," Johnson said, "To qualify outside the top ten and fight back and be equal eighth for the round was a great team effort and a fantastic way to finish the weekend."
