Only way is up for Brabham, IRWIN

17 September 2011

IRWIN Racing will look to put the disappointment of Saturday behind it as it focuses on making its way through the field in the L&H Phillip Island 500.

The IRWIN Tools-backed team will start the first endurance race of the season at the rear of the grid after Alex Davison finished 17th and David Brabham 26th in their respective qualifying races and failed to accrue enough points to haul themselves off the final spot on the grid.

With the IRWIN Ford not handling well, the drivers tried to get as much as they could out of the car. Regular pilot Davison made up places when half the field pitted during his race, but Brabham suffered when he stalled at the start of his race.

“It was obviously a really poor start," the veteran admitted, "I'm used to rolling starts and not standing starts and got it all wrong, which is unfortunate because we were 19th and I felt we had reasonable car pace to run between 19th and tenth.

"I then got stuck behind the guys in front of me and it was difficult to pass. It was a race to forget really.

"We'll focus on tomorrow and look at what we can do to improve the car. We're starting at the back, but anything can happen in these long races, so we're heads up and we'll see what happens.”

The 113-lap L&H Phillip Island 500, which will see both drivers taking turns behind the wheel, starts at 1.35pm local time on Sunday.
