Coulthard targets strong Sandown
1 January 1901
Fabian Coulthard says he hopes to give the Glenfords Racing team reason to celebrate as the V8 Supercar Championship heads to Sandown for the fifth round of the year.
With the Sandown round of the season reverting to a sprint race format for the first time since 2002, the Queen's Borthday holiday meeting will mark the first time that the Kiwi racer has 'flown solo' at the Melbourne circuit during his V8 career to date.
Having already taken a number of top ten finishes so far this season, and with three previous visits to Sandown under his belt, Coulthard will hope to continue taking the fight to the bigger teams amongst the V8 paddock as he seeks to improve on his current tenth place in the championship standings.
"Sandown was very unique as an enduro event because it was so easy to go a lap down, but now with it being a sprint race format we don't really have to worry about that because it will be very hard to lose a lap now,” he said. "From that aspect, the pressure's off a little bit, but still we are going to Sandown to get a good result and do the best we can as always.
"I think if you've got a good engine and you can get all the power to the ground off the slower corners, it will put you in a good position come the race time. We've got a strong engine and a good overall car package and we've been doing everything right up until now, so we just have to build on the momentum that we've gained over the last few rounds.
"My best result at Sandown so far was, I think, ninth with Jason Richards in
2005 and I've got a good shot at bettering that with Glenfords Racing this weekend."
Team principal Paul Cruickshank said he was proud of how his team has performed so far this season and was hopeful that the form displayed in the opening four rounds of the year would continue.
"Glenfords Racing is currently the highest place single-car team on the teams' championship tally; I think we are doing an excellent job,” he said. "Since the Perth round, we have done further testing and I'm really pleased with our development.
"The entire Glenfords team has been working very hard and we've been systematically improving round by round, and we will press on at Sandown."
