Jamie Whincup has increased his lead at the head of the V8 Supercar Championship standings with a dominant performance in the V8 Supercar Coffee Club Challenge on the Gold Coast.
Not only did the Team Vodafone man take the round win, he also secured victory in each of the three races – leading home Garth Tander and Mark Winterbottom in each 27 lap encounter.
It marked Tander's fourth round win of the year and built on a third straight Bathurst win last time out at Mount Panorama.
Whincup qualified on pole position on the Gold Coast and produced a faultless drive in race one to lead for the duration despite the close attention of Tander in the closing stages.
Despite the best efforts of both Tander and Winterbottom in the second and third races, Whincup was able to come through the weekend undefeated to add a maximum 300 points to his championship tally.
“It was a very special weekend taking pole and winning all three races,” he said. “This was the only major race I hadn't won so it is feels really good to be able to tick it off my list of goals.
“Full credit must go to the team, we didn't necessarily have the quickest car out there but we made the most of opportunities as they arose.”
Team-mate Craig Lowndes finished the round in sixth place, helping the Triple Eight run team to take the lead of the teams' championship standings.
“It was a tough weekend,” he admitted. “The car was actually very good but I couldn't utilise it as I was stuck in traffic all weekend.
“We still came away with some very good points and I have maintained fourth in the championship. Overall it was a great team effort, we have come away with two straight cars and we are leading both the team and driver championships.”
