Whincup extends championship lead
12 July 2009
TeamVodafone's Jamie Whincup has extended his lead in the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship Series, after finishing second in today's twelfth race of the season in Townsville.
The reigning champion, who won yesterday's inaugural race qualified third for today's second 200km instalment and raced solidly, but didn't quite have the tyres to match race winner James Courtney.
After 12 races Whincup has now accumulated 1560 points and sits 174 points clear of second placed Will Davison.
“To be honest that is all I had today,” Whincup said. “I pushed James as hard as I could but he obviously had a better tyre bank than us. I am very happy with second place though as I have extended my championship lead on a track that had so many variables.
“The track and its set-up is absolutely fantastic - and it is a credit to those who have organised and built it.”
Craig Lowndes meanwhile finished ninth in the sister TeamVodafone entry, the same position in which he started.
He lost radio communications during the race which resulted in him missing the call to pit during the first safety car period and he dropped back to 21st. With only a pit board as communication Lowndes then used the subsequent safety car opportunity to bridge the gap and overtook 12 cars before the end of the race.
“I would have loved to of had another 50 laps as the car was a dream and I was really enjoying myself out there - it was quite peaceful,” Lowndes explained. “The improvements we made from yesterday were really good and the second safety car definitely helped.
“This weekend has been great in terms of information gathering and has built us a solid base of technical knowledge for next year. I can't wait to get back here.”
