McConville returns with Fujitsu Series outing

Cameron McConville: To be honest I've had itchy feet since watching the first event in the Middle East, so I'm really looking forward to racing again. I feel like I'm counting down the sleeps like an excited teenager again.
Cameron McConville will contest this weekend's Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series round at Winton Motor Raceway with a 'rekindled passion for racing'.

The Australian touring car great hasn't raced in V8 Supercars since the final event of the 2009 season – the Sydney Telstra 500 – but will this weekend return to the wheel in the second-tier Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series.

The comeback will give McConville crucial racing laps in preparation for the 2010 V8 Supercar endurance races where he will partner Toll Holden Racing Team driver Garth Tander. And after his lengthy break on the sidelines, McConville feels the break has reinvigorated his passion for the sport.

“To be honest I've had itchy feet since watching the first event in the Middle East, so I'm really looking forward to racing again.” said McConville. “I feel like I'm counting down the sleeps like an excited teenager again. I think the break has been pretty good to be honest which has rekindled my passion to go racing again.”

Though Winton Motor Raceway is the scene of McConville's only V8 Supercar race victory in 2004, he doesn't place any expectations on himself for his Fujitsu Series debut.

“I'm not going there with any expectations. I think you've got to give the Fujitsu Series guys some credit; they're pretty quick now with some really great drivers in there. The idea for me is to get back in the groove; I certainly want to race those guys but I really don't have any targets at this stage other than to get out there, enjoy my racing again and dial back into driving a V8 Supercar.

“If the other drivers can beat some main game guys or race with them, then I think it adds to the credibility of the Series. The depth now in the top 10 is looking very impressive to be honest and it's becoming a legitimate second-tier Series like NASCAR and the Nationwide Series.

“Winton's been good to me. I've had some tough races there over the years, I actually rolled over in the Lansvale car about seven years ago. But I grew up racing there; I think I had my first car race there in '89 in Formula Vee.”

Meanwhile, regardless whether McConville is victorious or not, the Fujitsu Series racer will be celebrating his fifth wedding anniversary with wife Cassandra this weekend.

“It's funny, when I won at Winton for my only V8 Supercar victory there in '04 it was the very first race my now-wife went to watch and it's actually our fifth wedding anniversary this weekend. It's all a bit spooky really.”

McConville will race the Eggleston Motorsport Holden Commodore VE for the next two Fujitsu Series rounds - at this weekend's Winton Motor Raceway and July's Sucrogen Townsville 400.
