Casey Stoner makes V8 Supercar debut
28 February 2013
Former double MotoGP champion Casey Stoner began his transition to four wheels by finishing ninth fastest, out of 30 drivers, in his first ever Dunlop Series V8 Supercar practice session in Adelaide.
The 27-year-old Red Bull Racing Australia driver, who had driven a V8 Supercar around a full track just twice before this morning, made an impressive start to the session, which was red-flagged before anyone had a chance to post a lap time.
After a five minute wait, the session recommenced on the unforgiving Adelaide street circuit, with Stoner coping well in traffic at his first attempt.
And it didn't take long for him to get on pace, recording a best time of 1.24.89 and out-pacing a plethora of drivers with top tier V8 Supercars experience.
“It was a very good run out of the box,” team owner Roland Dane said.
“He was just 1.2 seconds off the quickest guys out there and he has never been to the circuit before or raced within the confines of walls and the track was very green.
“We're pretty happy with that. He finished top-10 with plenty of experienced guys all around him and behind him. So he is in the thick of the action. He didn't touch anything, he didn't hit anything.
“He did a great job first run out and I'm sure he'll be more relaxed now.”
The No.27 Red Bull Pirtek Holden sat in the top-10 for the majority of the session, Stoner faring better than a number of drivers who didn't complete the session.
Stoner will return to Adelaide circuit this afternoon for a second practice session with his debut race on four wheels to take place at 5.45pm (Adelaide) Friday after his 9.55am qualifying session.
